Quantization of Hall conductivity

A qualitative explanation is given for the experimentally observed quantization of the Hall conductivity a_{xy} in units Å^{2}/2ÔÇ1Ç for twodimensional systems in a magnetic field. The explanation is based on the formulation of the localization theory in terms of the renormalization group. The difference between a_{xy} and ne^{2}/ 2ÔéÇ (Sa_{xy}) at finite temperatures is related only to the presence of the dissipative conductivity σ_{χχ} (\Sa_{xy} \ ~ ασ_{χχ}, where α is a number of order 1).
